Some Like It Dark

By Linda.Winfree on March 21, 2007

Every morning (and afternoon), I’m faced with deep, dark temptation.

Deep.

Dark.

Smooth.

Pure sinful temptation.

Yep, it’s a big basket of chocolate that sits in the school office. Usually, I can find a few pieces of dark chocolate hiding among the milk chocolate kisses and peanut butter cups. A couple of bites of smooth semi-sweet chocolate and I’m good for the day. To me, real chocolate has a little bite to it.

I like my entertainment the way I like my chocolate — a little on the dark side, a little on the real side.

When it comes to books and reading, I tend to go dark. Not many ‘sweet’ reads on my shelves. I love the blend of sharp reality and simmering evil Stephen King brings to his books. When it comes to short stories, I look for something Bradbury-ish — the weirdness that underlies the normal in his work. The same qualities drew me to The X-Files and more recently to The Dresden Files.

I like a little darkness and a little grittiness in my characters as well, which is probably why I like Dresden so much. He’s my kind of hero — not perfect, not altogether good. He seems real, a little on the dangerous side. In the episodes I’ve seen, he has definite gray areas — the kind of guy who will do whatever it takes to make sure good comes out on top. A definite dichotomy.

Just my type.

Deep and dangerously real.

A dark soul.

Smooth.

Tempting.

So how about you? Do you like it dark?

  1. LMAO Linda I agree with you – I love the dark stuff… but in terms of chocolate, I only like the whiter-than-white! I guess opposites attract LOL

  2. Edgy is good, but not too dark. I like people who look at the darkness and find the humor in it. Which is why I like Dresden and the X-Files, too!

  3. Oh, Olivia, I can’t eat white chocolate — too rich for me!

  4. Sela, I love Dresden’s wry humor. I didn’t think I’d like the show at first (I started watching with the DH), but the more I watch, the more I’m drawn into his character. I can see glimpses of the layers and I just want to delve deeper!

MY tastes are drawn to Dexter…Showtime’s new series. That is a truly dangerous man…serial killer…and yet they manage to make him human, funny, and insecure. I can’t wait for the new season. Why is it we always go for the ones who need redemption, and cheer them on to actually find it? Gia Dawn

  6. Got the same thing here in my office. The pretty pastel Easter M&M coating on the outside, dark chocolate inside. Think my lunch is taking too long and I need yet another handful now!

  7. Oh darlin’, I love me a dark and sinful novel. It’s a rare thing when I dive into a sweet book and if I do, I tend to not stay there too long. I pop right out of the story and find myself craving “deep and dangerously real”.

  8. Give me dark chocolate any day. Yuuuummmmm!

I like edgy as well … something that will make me sit up and take notice. Probably why I enjoy paranormals so much. They have that sense of mystery and “what ifs” that I find intriguing. I do, however, have to have that HEA with the books I read. Which is probably why I stopped reading King years ago. Can’t handle that losing a character that I’ve invested time and emotion in.

I loooove the Dresden files. Blackstone portrays Harry so well. Exactly as I pictured him in the books.

  9. I’ll take my chocolate any old way … but my men I like dark and dangerously gorgeous ;-)

  10. Oooh, Gia. I’ve heard about that Dexter! Haven’t seen it yet, but it sounded like my kind of show!

Liz, there are Dresden books?! Whoo-hoo! I didn’t know that. I’ll have to look for them.

Tricia and Rene, glad to see I have counterparts in my dark and dangerous camp!

I think I’m going to see if I can find some of those dark chocolate M&M’s Bonnie has . . .

  11. I haven’t watched Dresden yet, I’ll have to check it out some night.

Totally love the dark and devilish hero. I just watched the new PBS Jane Eyre a few weeks ago and Rochester made me all weak in the knees.

    Dark Chocolate? Of course!

  12. munch munch munch Eating dark chocolate right now, in fact!

I also like the devilish, dangerous man in fiction. There’s something about a man who can so very easily be frightening, then seeing him fall in love and knowing that his woman will be the center of his world… oh, baby. That gets me every time. And anyone who messes with his woman? Is going to scream for a very long time. I think it’s just some kind of primal instinct. Deep down, I want to read about a man who can fight all his love’s demons.

Now in real life? I don’t really need protecting, and some of those sexy heroes would really piss me off. That just goes back to my rules of reading and writing romance—reality is merely a place to start…

Yum! Give me dark anyday—in chocolate and in my books as well. I’m a sucker for the wounded, dark, brooding hero.

  14. I’m with you 100%. Love dark chocolate. Love Stephen King. Never really thought about it ‘til I read your post but yes, I guess I like the dark side too!
