Thanksgiving happens to be my favorite holiday. A day where friends and families get together with no presents to contend with. Just pure and simple enjoyment. I can look back on many Christmases that weren’t happy occasions, but never a Thanksgiving.
Curious I did a bit of research and found myself enthralled with the wealth of information available.
Did you know…
*In the autumn of 1621, the Pilgrims held a three-day feast? They killed wild turkeys and deer to supplement their harvest of vegetables. I’d love to travel back in time to experience the first one.
*For years after, Thanksgiving was held sporadically on different days in different parts of the country.
*As president, George Washington would proclaim a Thanksgiving every now and then, if there was something specific to be thankful for.
*In 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, and the day has been celebrated annually ever since.
Each year, I give thanks for my friends and family. I’m grateful to be able to experience another Thanksgiving.
One Thanksgiving many years ago sticks in my mind. My first husband and I owned a thoroughbred racing stable at the time. There hadn’t been many winning horses for several months and our finances were at the bottom. The track carried a Thanksgiving morning race card. To our delight, one of our horses won.
The mood was most jovial that Thanksgiving Day. When we were ready to eat, my daughter, five at the time, said grace. We bowed our heads and she did quite well thanking God for our food, family and good health. But she didn’t stop there. With a huge sigh, she said, “And thank God, Celtic Hondo won so now we have some money.”
Kids, you gotta love them.
My sincere wishes that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!
