Like a lot of writers out there, I have a blog. Besides that, I’m a member of another blog with a group of wonderful writers, and I guest blog on several other blogs, including this one.
My problem is always trying to figure out what in the heck to blog about. I’m always trying to think of timely topics that will inform or entertain the reader, at least for two or three minutes. I mean, I’m a writer so it should be easy. Right? I said, right?
But it doesn’t work that way. Writing fiction, penning tales of vampires, dragons, small town love, and hot ménage sex—now, that’s easy. g
What I have trouble with is coming up with day-to-day topics of interest for my blog entries. I’m in awe of writers who always seem to be witty, current and interesting in their choice of subjects and their delivery. Some bloggers can make the trials and tribulations of a normal day seem exciting and humorous.
To date, my blogs here on the Samhain Blog have been about writing. About owning the title of writer and all that comes with it. I’ve even tackled the subject of things that go bump in the night and why we love to read about them. I guess this blog is really no different. It’s still about writing, just a different kind of writing.
Blogging, like any other kind of writing, is an art form. It takes talent to put together something that will make a person stop and read for two or three minutes. Some bloggers pick timely subjects and celebrity news, others can fill a column with family drama and the funny thing that happened to them while waiting in line at the grocery store.
Other writers have sidesplitting tales of family life and the trials of being a parent, or sad stories about life and rejection. The Samhain Blog is filled with entries like this. I personally stop and read it all the time. I get a smile, a laugh, and sometimes it makes me stop and think. Always, it is entertaining.
So, I sit here, fingers poised over the keyboards trying to think of a topic that at least make you smile. With any luck, the garbage will have to be taken out, the phone will ring and I’ll have to talk to telemarketers, or my teeth will need to be flossed.
Perhaps, if I’m really lucky, aliens will come knocking on my door and abduct me. Now, that would definitely give me something to talk about.
Hmm…I’ve read some really great alien abduction novels…but that’s a topic for another blog.

Wit, creativity, originality, inspiration, at the snap of your fingertips? Guh. I’m with you. It’s tough, and sometimes I have to give myself permission to just let it go for a while. I think it was Sela who blogged about how her writing inspiration and blogging inspiration usually flow together. I’m the opposite. When I’m inspired to write, I’m not inspired to blog. Then I feel guilty about not blogging, not promoting, and that starts interfering with the writing…
It’s tough to come up with something to say every day. I’ve started to give myself a bit of slack. LOL It was either that or plead insanity.
I really admire those writers who seem to create something interesting or funny almost daily.
Enjoyed your blog, NJ. Really enjoyed the fact that you couldn’t think of anything to blog about because I’m soooo there with you!
NJ,
I can understand finding it to be hard to come up with something that will interest people. I love reading about the writer in you. To know that it is something you truly enjoy. That is what makes your books so wonderful.
I have only been to a few Blogs.. I finally was able to get to this one.{wink}
For me my blog kinda acts as both a way for me to talk about the great books I’ve read and as a pseudo therapist.:-) I get to vent about whatever is driving me crazy at the moment. I just have fun with it. It doesn’t matter if anyone reads it. It’s nice if they do, but that’s not why I publish it. It simply lets me talk about what I need to talk about when I need to talk about it.
On my blog, I talk about what interests me, which is just about everything.
Once in a while I’m inspired to “go deep”, but like my blog tagline says, it’s just a place to deposit the random thoughts that fall out of my brain!
Sometimes I wish blogs had never come into existence!!
Damn, missed ya NJ.
Bloody computers. Stupid laptop needed to crash and get re-built. I’m thinking of giving it crash. With a Baseball bat!!!!
‘See’ ya!
I know just where you’re coming from. Finding things to talk about on my blog other than book recommendations, reviews, etc. is a definite challange. I blog in several places too. On my favorite blog, I get to be scandalously naughty.
Thanks, Anny. It’s not easy to always know what to blog about.
Thank you for stopping by, Deb. It is fun to write about writing. LOL
That’s a great use for a blog, Kathy. I enjoy talking about great books I’ve read as well. I should try and remember the few books I’ve read lately and blog about them. It’s been a while.
Random thoughts are good, Carolan. My problem is trying to make my random thoughts interesting. LOL
LOL Some days I do too, Jody.
Hey, Rachel. Sorry you’re having computer problems. There were blog problems here yesterday as well. But everything seems back to normal this morning.
LOL I love your Hussy blog, Nic. It is hard when you blog at several places and guest blog and try and keep up your own blog….Aaaahhhhh!
I was so bad at keeping up my personal blog that I started a group blog with a few other writers, Erotic Muses. Now I only have every Friday to worry about and even that’s a strain! Beginning soon, I’m going to post a serial story. The book is an older novella that just needs a little polishing and it should fill my blogging needs for at least two months! Afterward, I’ll give a pdf away at my web site as a free read for promotional purposes.
A topical, humorous, witty, entertaining or controversial blog post? Fuggedaboutit! I’m a writer not a personality. I just can’t be that interesting on a regular basis.
As a contributor to Samhain’s blog, maintaining my own blog at my website and participating a group blog called magicalmusings, I’m more of a last minute blogger. I work well under pressure. Its usually the morning that I’m scheduled to blog that I come up with my subject matter. (Desperation is a great inspiration)
Great subject, NJ. I’m soooo with you here.
Sharing a blog is a great idea, Bonnie. I’m part of a few group blogs, including this one.
Posting a serial story is a great idea!
I’m with you, Liz. Desperation is a great inspiration. I find I’m always thinking…what can I blog about? LOL
N.J., I don’t care if you blog or not, as long as you keep writing good stories. Just keep talking about your books.
