How many books do you have lying around? How many are stored on your computer or e-book reader? Take a moment to evaluate that, then ask yourself: Am I a bookaholic?
Truly defining yourself as a bookaholic can be tricky. So, here are a few other questions to ask yourself:
When you buy books, do you hang onto them to read later, instead of right away?
Do you have so many tangible books that it’s hard to find anything else in your house or room, or on your computer/reader for that matter?
Do you have a problem ridding yourself of books you’ve read, just in case you want to read them again?
Do you buy books even when you know you have dozens or more waiting to be read at home?
Do you buy books, knowing you need to use the money for something more important, like bills or food?
If you’ve answered yes to all of these questions, then you are a bookaholic.
I’m with you. I have a hard time getting rid of books. I buy them, hang on to them with the intent to read them later and I find myself surrounded. I have three boxes of books and two bookshelves, plus what’s just lying around on tables, chairs, cabinets etc. I’m constantly buying books, even those I’m not sure I’ll read.
Please tell me I’m not alone in my addiction.

Um. Does buying a house with a room just for our books count? Someone asked us once why we bought a four bedroom house when we only have two kids. We blinked and told them, “Library.” We’ve built shelves into the walls and are STILL running out of room.
I have two piles of books on my desk that I bought and haven’t read yet, a ton of ebooks (some of which I haven’t read yet), and one of my favorite quotes is “When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes.” (Erasmus)
Heck, my sister-in-law has that on a t-shirt, and I wants it, my precioussss. And to top it all off, I read both the Silmarillion and Acheron (Acheron was better) in one day.
Feel better now? =D
I realized I was a bookaholic when we moved this summer, down-sizing from a house to a co-op apartment. I was forced to part with many hundreds of books and it really broke my heart. The upside? I denoted everything that was in excellent condition to our local library for their ongoing book sale which raises funds for the library. As a former librarian myself, I always support libraries in every way possible. Even as we moved, I was buying new books, driving my husband to tear out his hair! Can’t help it, I love to read and collect books.

I have books everywhere. I have given some away because we have our house for sale but it was difficult.
Dana: I would say that is a definite qualification for a bookaholic!
Jacqueline: That’s a wonderful thing to do. I just wish I could get myself to donate my books. i just can’t!
Diane: It’s always difficult to give up an addiction.
Thanks for the comments all!

Rose, I have to jump in here as well.
Hi, my name is Viv and I’m a bookaholic. If it’s been more than 15 minutes since I’ve had one in my hand I must be asleep.
My most telling book addiction story is from before ebooks, when I had to take hard copy on backcountry trips. We did a 10 day canoe trip that we… wait for it…. ran out of food because I filled one dry bag with books instead of food.
And I still ran out of reading material that trip. That hurt more than going hungry.
Oh, and Dawn, you and me need to party sometime, girl. My hubby jokes that my idea of light reading for the weekend is to cruise through the entire Lord of the Rings series.
I don’t see the joke, but then…
