I am a master juggler, in case you didn’t know. And, unfortunately, I’m not talking about juggling for fun (we won’t go down that road). I’m referring to the balls in life.
I read a book recently called Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas by James Patterson. While I found the story to be a bit thin, there was an analogy in there that hit home for me. One of the characters has a heart attack when she’s only 35 or so, and she recognizes something has to change (she’s a doctor).
We all juggle five balls in life. Four of them are glass and cannot be dropped (family, friends, health, integrity), the fifth one is rubber – and that’s your job/career.
It’s a lesson for us all I think, to juggle everything in our lives, but to think of our job/career as the rubber one takes some hard thinking. If we were to let it drop, theoretically it would bounce back, right? That particular analogy really made me think about what I’m doing in life and how I’m accomplishing it.
I hope crossing fingers in another two years, I can quit my day job, but for now I work full-time during the day and write evenings/weekends. I totally envy those writers out there who were able to quit their day job. I can’t tell you how much I look forward to it.
I made some bad decisions this summer and nearly worked myself to exhaustion running around like a maniac. Everything suffered including my health, friendships and relationships. I won’t make that mistake again – rubber ball, remember?
In the meantime, I’m going to keep those glass balls in the air.
