I’ve decided I’m going to do something a little risky this Thanksgiving.

Well, risky for me, anyway. Hmm… Perhaps this wasn’t the most thought out title I could have come up with since MY definition of being adventurous and say…everyone else in the entire universe’s definition of being adventurous is something completely different.

So forgive the brouhaha.

You see, little mild mannered me has decided to buck tradition this Thanksgiving. Yes, I’m doing it. I’ve already decided despite the consequences. After all, what’s a holiday without making somebody in your family mad at you? Oh, and they’re going to be mad all right. Do you want to know why?

Because

I’m

Not

Making

Pumpkin Pie this year.

Eeep. There. I said it.

You see, I was watching the Food Network the other night instead of writing—er, I mean AFTER I was done my writing and there was Paula Deen demonstrating one of those fancy trifle desserts I can never resist. Right then and there I decided her pumpkin dessert would my replace pumpkin pie.

Here it is:
Pumpkin Gingerbread Trifle
Ingredients:
• 2 (14-ounce) packages gingerbread mix (I’m making mine from scratch, though)
• 1 (5.1-ounce) box cook-and-serve vanilla pudding mix
• 1 (30-ounce) can pumpkin pie filling
• 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
• 1/3 teaspoon ground cardamom or cinnamon
• 1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping
• 1/2 cup gingersnaps, optional

Directions:
Bake the gingerbread according to the package directions; cool completely. Meanwhile, prepare the pudding and set aside to cool. Stir the pumpkin pie filling, sugar, and cardamom into the pudding. Crumble 1 batch of gingerbread into the bottom of a large, pretty bowl. Pour 1/2 of the pudding mixture over the gingerbread, then add a layer of whipped topping. Repeat with the remaining gingerbread, pudding, and whipped topping. Sprinkle of the top with crushed gingersnaps, if desired. Refrigerate overnight. Trifle can be layered in a punch bowl.

I love to try new recipes—even at the risk of bodily harm from family. Just as long as they don’t touch the fingers. (So I can still write, of course)

Are you making anything NEW and Adventurous this Thanksgiving?

  1. But you’re going to pick up a pumpkin pie at the store, right? I mean, there will be pumpkin pie, won’t there? Because otherwise, I would be a very vocally unhappy guest at your dinner. Seriously. Pumpkin pie is tres important.

  2. Too funny – I saw a similar recipe in Better Homes and Gardens mag this month and I am totally making it this year instead of pie!!
