I love to shop. If I weren’t an author, I’d be a personal shopper. I don’t care what I’m shopping for, or why I’m shopping. I just want to shop. This, of course, means that I love the holiday season and all the “necessary” gift buying.
I love strolling down the aisles of the department store, searching for the perfect gift. I enjoy taking my time to browse. After all, it’s the act of shopping that sends delight through me?not the act of buying. Which is a good thing, right? Otherwise, I’d be a shopaholic with horrific credit card debt. As it is, I’m one of those rare breed of people. I’m a thrifty shopaholic.
Only one thing dims the joy of the shopping season. After spending an entire thrilling day at the mall, why do I have to face the awful truth once I get home? I groan and grumble as I trudge through the front door, already feeling the loss of my blissful spending glow. So I ask you…if I buy, must I wrap?
Oh, sure, I could pay a customer service rep to wrap the gifts. But I hate the idea of having to fork over money for something I can do. Besides, to wrap the amount of gifts I buy would cost a small fortune! Think of the gift I could buy with that money!
So, I do what I must. I get on my hands and knees, pull out the tub of wrapping paper and bows, and get the dreaded task done. By the time the gifts are under the tree, I’m ready to flop on the couch and swear off the holidays.
And then it happens. The television is on and my favorite store is having a sale. The memory of crookedly-cut wrapping paper and balls of tape fade. A smile starts forming on my lips and I sit up, intent on memorizing every detail of the commercial. Within minutes, I’m dashing toward the door, snatching up my purse, and bolting out the door. I’m smiling all the way to the mall again because I know that if I shop, I’ll soon feel better.
