What else do you do?

By Mari Carr on April 1, 2009

One of the things I love about hanging out around the Samhain blog and café is that I’m in the midst of a community of readers. I’m surrounded by people with whom I have something in common. I’ve had some really great discussions about books and I’ve made some very dear friends here based on our shared love of the written word.

Anyone who knows me will tell you—I adore reading and writing. I literally live, breathe, eat books, and I think that fact is clear when you look at my chosen professions—librarian by day, writer by night. But sometimes we get so wrapped up in our conversations about books, authors, and new series that I think we fail to mention the other things we love in our lives. What else do we do? So I thought I’d go first!

• Personally, I think iTunes is the greatest software invention after Word and rarely a day goes by when I’m not listening to my music. It calms me down and relaxes me like nothing else.
• My daughter and I are addicted to American Idol. This year, she’s crazy about Adam (gimme a break) and I like Danny and Matt.
• I run two or three days a week with my sixty-four year old mother and have for years. She runs circles around me because the truth is I hate running, but I love the time spent with my mom. It’s become ‘our’ time and over the years, I’ve learned innumerable things about her.
• I’m crazy about musicals. Yep…there…I’ve said it, I’ve come clean. I’ve made many trips to NYC to see Broadway shows and the soundtrack to Les Mis has been in the CD player in my car for nearly a decade.

So I’ll throw the question out to you—what else do you do?

  1. What else do I do other than read and write?

    Ummm,ahhh….

    thinking, thinking hard

Actually, this one is easy for me. I get hauled out on wilderness adventures. Don’t get me wrong, I LIKE going skiing with a backpack on ten miles into the bush to stay at a cabin with a wood burning stove, packrats the size of small dogs and an outhouse with a view.

I do enjoy it. Really. I just don’t plan the trips, I let my hubby get the pleasure of the preparation and then I merrily accompany him.

I also love to cook. I’ll cook everyday as long as I don’t have to clean. I figure when we eventually get to the empty nest stage I’ll be laughing. I’ll cook, hubby will wash… no more fights about food and clean up. Someday.

  2. You mean there’s a world outside of books and writing?
    LOL
No really, I know there is. All I have to do is listen to the screaming and yelling of the Tribe to know there is.
Okay I’m with Viv, not the wilderness adventure thingy but I love traveling to new places and I’ve managed a lot of that lately.
Spending time with the Tribe is cool, exhausting but cool.
I love a good feed but don’t ask me to cook. I doubt either of us will survive the experience.

    Mari,

I actually have to cut down on the things I like to do because it is too easy for me to do these things and not write—or read. My several garden beds are in sad need of weeding and fresh dirt and mulch. My roller skates have dust bunnies attached to the wheels. And I haven’t gotten to win a Scrabble competition in a couple of years, simply because I haven’t been going to the weekly plays here in town. My piano keyboard also has dust on it. These are 4 things I LOVE to do for recreation. Bike riding is another favorite, but I plan to start that up again, as soon as I can get a new bicycle. Sometime in the next year or so—— !

Meanwhile, I try to walk the dogs about 2 – 4 miles about 3 4 times a week. Or sometimes, I just put on music and dance! I have quit volunteering so much, so hopefully, I can start doing those things I used to enjoy, besides writing and reading.

    Julie
