Are You Crafty?

By On Jan 27 2012, 9:00 am

BeadsCrafty. A rather fun little word, it literally means to be skilled in deception. But I’ve also heard it used in casual conversation when referring to a totally different kind of skill. As a writer, the first thing I think of when I hear the word craft is the craft of writing, which of course is a creative endeavor, but in this case I’m talking about arts and crafts.

My mother was an artistic kind of person. She painted, wrote poetry, embroidered, and played the mandolin. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been inclined toward doing creative things too. I play the piano, sew, crochet and knit, embroider, do needlepoint and cross-stitch, all with varying degrees of proficiency. And I really enjoy doing them all. But for quite some time I haven’t tackled any of those hobbies because these days I devote most of my available time to writing.

However, I recently kind of accidentally developed a new obsession interest. One that’s been eating up a lot of my time. It got so bad that I had to set strict time limits so that it didn’t bite into my writing time.

What is it? Beading.

I’ve always loved jewelry and beads and sparkly things, and suspected I’d enjoy this craft, but I could never justify the cost of getting into it until recently when I started on a sekrit project that involved some beading. So, you see, my taking up this particular hobby was born out of necessity. It’s true. Honest.

Yep. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. LOL

So now I’m happily working away at this craft. Only trouble is I really LOVE doing it and would gladly do it all day. Yes, I’ve discovered it’s highly addictive. So far my self-control is winning out, but keep your fingers crossed for me that I can keep it up. LOL

How about you, are you crafty? There’s a vast array of crafts to choose from, something to suit every taste out there, ranging from scrapbooking to metalworking. So, what craft(s) do you love to do? Just one? Many? I’d love to hear about it. =)

  1. I love trying out different crafts. I find it a good outlet instead of writing constantly, and it definitely gives me fodder for future books. At present hubby and I are making our own paper and gift cards, which is fun.

Oooh, that sounds really interesting, Shelley. I’ve never heard of making your own paper. And now I must google just how that is done. LOL

I hear what you’re saying about beading. It is SO addictive. I love using handmade lampwork beads. All the varieties of beads and the colors…yummy. It’s a different outlet for my creativity than writing, and necklaces made by the author make wonderful contest prizes for readers. The ArtBeadScene blog is especially inspirational. Check it out.

Oh yeah, I love those lampwork beads as well. They really are gorgeous. One of my favorite parts of beading is just looking at all the beads. They’re so beautiful. And such a joy to play with as I try different combinations of them to see what ones I like best together.

I never thought of making necklaces as contest prizes but I could definitely do that. Thanks so much for the tips, Lindsay! I just subscribed to that blog as well. =)

I love all crafts but right know i’m into knitting. I have a hard time trying to split my time between the two along with always finding new crafts and sparkling things in the craft stores, its very hard but so much fun.
