Crafty. A rather fun little word, it literally means to be skilled in deception. But I’ve also heard it used in casual conversation when referring to a totally different kind of skill. As a writer, the first thing I think of when I hear the word craft is the craft of writing, which of course is a creative endeavor, but in this case I’m talking about arts and crafts.
My mother was an artistic kind of person. She painted, wrote poetry, embroidered, and played the mandolin. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been inclined toward doing creative things too. I play the piano, sew, crochet and knit, embroider, do needlepoint and cross-stitch, all with varying degrees of proficiency. And I really enjoy doing them all. But for quite some time I haven’t tackled any of those hobbies because these days I devote most of my available time to writing.
However, I recently kind of accidentally developed a new
obsession interest. One that’s been eating up a lot of my time. It got so bad that I had to set strict time limits so that it didn’t bite into my writing time.
What is it? Beading.
I’ve always loved jewelry and beads and sparkly things, and suspected I’d enjoy this craft, but I could never justify the cost of getting into it until recently when I started on a sekrit project that involved some beading. So, you see, my taking up this particular hobby was born out of necessity. It’s true. Honest.
Yep. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. LOL
So now I’m happily working away at this craft. Only trouble is I really LOVE doing it and would gladly do it all day. Yes, I’ve discovered it’s highly addictive. So far my self-control is winning out, but keep your fingers crossed for me that I can keep it up. LOL
How about you, are you crafty? There’s a vast array of crafts to choose from, something to suit every taste out there, ranging from scrapbooking to metalworking. So, what craft(s) do you love to do? Just one? Many? I’d love to hear about it. =)
