I've been on a break, sabbatical, hiatus, what-have-you for the last couple of years. A lot of actual stress combined with the self-imposed stress that I just wasn't writing fast enough and doing all the stuff I was supposed to do led to a two year period of not doing anything at all.
Every time I sat down to write, Mahjongg Titans magically appeared on my screen. I'd turn it off, stare at the cursor, and soon enough there it was again. I have about a 70% success rate with Mahjongg, so I'm calling that a win.
Or when I sat down, it was like someone sent out a signal to the universe that someone, somewhere needed me. Or wanted me. Or just liked the way it sounded when they said, "Moooooooom!" Somewhere along the way, I lost the ability to say, "I'm working. Find your own socks."
My mom moved in with us and has needed some care through various medical issues. Also, her standards of a clean house are WAY higher than mine, so I found myself washing things at odd hours when the mood struck her, which is not the same is it striking me.
Then we moved. Again. We think this might be our last shift for a while – at least until the kids graduate from high school – but you never know.
So it's not like I spent my break time lazing around, sipping MaiTais in my feather boa and lacy peignoir, but it wasn't a break that I really wanted to take.
However, it turns out that this break may not have been such a bad thing. I started writing just before Christmas and hey, look! I'm still writing! And I'm getting back into the cyber-world again, too. My website broke and I just kind of let it sit like an old rusted out Chevy on blocks. It's off the blocks and getting a whole rehaul, but it's not quite ready for prime time yet.
All in all, while I wouldn't have planned to take the break I did, it's turning out to be a positive thing now that I'm moving forward again. Be assured, you'll be hearing more from me from here on out. More writing!
