Timesaving Miracle

By On Sep 3 2012, 10:16 am

Like most of the Samhain editors, I work from home, juggling the demands of my Samhain job with a writing career, two teenage daughters, three cats, and the demands of housework, laundry, the necessity to eat something other than takeaway pizza occasionally…

Pretty much all writers, and anyone else who works from home, can probably empathize!

So I'm always on the lookout for something that will genuinely save me time.  Currently my best friends are keyboard shortcuts, fields that auto-complete, my new smartphone that means I can get emails on the go, my laptop so I can work anywhere, my dishwasher, my supermarket delivery service…

And my latest, a robot vacuum-cleaner:

If you're thinking of getting one, oh my goodness, DO IT.  It's the coolest thing ever, and is genuinely, 100% saving me time.

Except for when I'm so mesmerized by something else doing the vacuuming for me that I stand and watch it.

It's probably a good thing my cats don't react like this, or I'd never get anything done!

  1. How does it know where to go?? And for me half the work in vacuuming is pickingi up stuff that I don’t think the damn thing would get around! Chest, chairs, table legs…

That’s a great video. Makes me want to get a Roomba and some kittens.

  2. Imogen Howson says:

It has clever clever sensors. When it hits a table leg it bounces away and comes back from another angle. I even had it going round my computer chair while I was working. It made me jump once when I forgot what it was, but aside from that it was fine.

  3. What about dogs and dog hair? I have a darling Sheltie who sheds faster than I can brush her.

  4. Linda says:

I’m on my second Roomba (first one was Wall-E, and now we have R2-D2), and they are fabulous! We have hardwood floors and many pets (dogs and cats), so it’s like having a maid come in every day to help out. Totally worth it. Get the best you can afford; you won’t regret it.

  5. Maya Lifton says:

The cats are sooo cute! The vacuum was kind of scary…. haha. It reminds me of that movie with Robin Williams… Flubber!!

I work from home and go to school at the same time, so I totally understand how crazy things can get. School is about an hour and a half away…. crazy, I know!
