Everything’s gone green: using a mood board

By On Sep 27 2013, 10:29 am

I think visually, so when it comes to writing a new novel a mood board is an essential I can’t do without. Lucky for me there’s so much foliage around these parts, as when the time came to draft my new Samhain Horror novel ‘The Jack in the Green‘ (releasing October 1st) I found inspiration during every stroll.

Some of the images made it straight into the text (readers of ‘The Jack in the Green’ will know the importance that trees joined at the roots have in the overall story), while others simply served to get me in the mood before writing. Like music (or in my case in addition to music) an evocative image can help fast-track you into your writing process. And, as was the case with many of the images included in the gallery below, I occasionally got lost inside of them.

I hope if you pick up my new book that you’ll enjoy getting lost in those forests too. Just watch out for ‘The Jack in the Green’.

I live in the UK, in the leafy county of Buckinghamshire, and (as anyone who has read my books will know) I derive a lot of inspiration from the local landscape. Eagle eyed readers familiar with my neck of the woods will spot my local Christmas tree plantation within the pages of ‘The Jack in [...]

The Lucifer Glass, the first in my series of occult novellas for Samhain, is out now. The first review of The Lucifer Glass, from Keri O’Shea of Brutal As Hell, describes the book as “a page turner”. It may cost you your soul. Daniel Gates is a fixer. Whatever his client wants, he can get [...]

Better Read Than Dead

By On Apr 16 2013, 8:45 am

When festival curator Adele Hartley launched Dead By Dawn in 1993, little did she know her creation would still be going strong two decades later. Every year, horror fans assemble in Edinburgh, Scotland for a full 4 days of frights. The line-up ranges from short films through live performances to feature premieres and signing sessions [...]

The second day of the sixth month of the thirteenth year (Tuesday June 2nd, 2013 to be precise) marks the release of my Samhain Horror novella The Lucifer Glass. This is the first in my new occult series of novellas, based around the central character of Daniel Gates. Here’s a sneaky peek at the cover [...]
