The Way To A Person’s Heart Is Through the Stomach

By On Feb 7 2014, 1:08 pm

With Valentine’s Day coming up, I’m sure you’re thinking of what romantic things to do for your special someone.  While there are plenty of recipes on the internet, in books, and in magazines, I thought I’d switch the focus to mindfulness and not just the objects we use when we plan a seduction.

I got to thinking about the Gift of the Magi: two married people, deeply in love with one another but without money to spend, give up their prized possessions in order to afford gifts for the other.  The gits they chose are for the item that was sold to purchase the gift: he bought her hair combs with the pocket watch he sold; she bought him a watch chain with the hair she shorn and sold.  So how does this apply to us, now?

Any meal can be made special, even something from a fast food place.  It’s all in the execution.  No matter what your budget, plan the evening with special candles, a table cloth (even a scrap of remnant cloth you find for two dollars at the clearance rack of a fabric store), and special table settings.  Even if it’s your ordinary daily flatware and plates, set them up with ceremony and make the moment unique.  Turn off the lights and set the tone with candlelight.  Try playing soft piano or guitar music.  Let the moment stretch without television, tweets, Facebook, emails, or any of a hundred other distractions with which we fill our days.

In short, pause and savor.

What about you?  What’s your favorite way to set up a special moment?

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”
- E.E. Cummings

Snow Day

By On Dec 9 2013, 11:01 am

As the Midwest hunkers down for our first storm, I’m reminded of all the things I love about snow.  I’m not a huge fan of the cold, but I love me the white stuff!  I hope it’s a White Christmas, too.  Here, then, in no particular order, are Noony’s Top Ten Reasons To Love Snow: [...]

December Begins

By On Dec 2 2013, 8:54 am

And so it starts.  Thanksgiving and Halloween are over, and the Superbowl is coming.  (Hah.  Bet you thought I’d say something else, huh?) So here we are, on the second day of December, the twelfth month of the thirteenth year of the second millenium of the current era.  As the year winds to a close [...]

NaNoMadMo!

By On Nov 11 2013, 7:54 am

It’s November, and you know what that means!  NANOWRIMO! For those of you who haven’t heard of this phenomenon, November is National Novel Writing Month – though it really could be called INTERnational Novel Writing Month since my city, Chicago, is competing in a word war with cities from all over the world – including [...]

A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words

By On Sep 11 2013, 10:53 am

Do you have a smart phone with a camera?  Many people do these days, and it’s a lot of fun to wander and snap shots of things with our devices.  They say a picture’s worth a thousand words and sometimes, on the internet, it might be worth even more. Here’s what I’ve found to be [...]
