I’m a firm believer in the idea that every love story is different. That said, there do seem to be a few themes that come back over and over again, especially if you read enough romance. There are tropes like secret babies and marriages of convenience, which while fun, tend to be a little divorced from most people’s realities. And then there are the more common experiences. Like friends to lovers.
A good friends to lovers story can be a delicate balance. You don’t get to play with that first rush of heady sexual attraction, because the hero and heroine have been pointedly not-sleeping-together for years. There’s no fun ‘getting to know you’ period like you would have with total strangers. And it’s pretty hard to sew in a mystery, or any kind of deep, dark, hidden past.
But what you do get to play with can be even better.

If you’ve ever watched a bad movie or a mediocre TV show, you know the drill. Female characters fall into one of two categories: good girls and bad girls. Virgins and whores. It’s a fact of fiction that’s been going on for decades now. And it’s wrong. Just plain wrong. The fact of the matter [...]

The world of BDSM is often portrayed in books and movies as an exotic one, far removed from the ordinary world of careers and grad school and doing the laundry. Often it takes place in a glossy world where everyone is richer, thinner, and more glamorous than you and slaves can serve their masters’ every [...]
