New Year’s Eve. Valentine’s Day. You birthday, your anniversary. For all of these sorts of events, it feels like people start asking you months ahead of time: what are your plans?
And the pressure, man, the pressure.
I think it’s somehow the worst for New Year’s Eve because there are all these images of fancy ball gowns and champagne in pretty flutes. Dancing and drinking, and everyone wants to be doing something cool. It’s not a holiday just for couples, and it’s not just about you. It’s about your status and your life.
When I was a kid, I always spent New Year’s Eve with my brother and my grandmother, while my parents jetted off to Atlantic City to attend some fancy party, and it was the best night of the year. We made all kinds of special treats and played games and stayed up super, super late. I didn’t imagine it could get any better.
On some level, maybe it never did.
