Fictional Fathers: The Good, the Bad, and the Bestial

Samhain Horror published my third novel in March (The Darkest Lullaby) and will serialize my fourth novel in June and July (Savage Species). In The Darkest Lullaby, the husband and potential father (Chris Crane) proves, by degrees, unworthy of his wife. How this happens and why it happens is one of the main concerns of the story, and though I don’t want to give everything away, I will say he makes some very bad decisions (or perhaps he’s ensnared into doing so).

In Savage Species my heroine Charly Florence is married to a man far worse than Chris Crane. Eric Florence, a millionaire basketball coach and father of three, seems to be a bad person. In truth, he’s far worse than Charly could ever imagine. How he changes—or perhaps more to the point, how his true nature is revealed—is one of the focal points of Savage Species (By the way, have you pre-ordered the free first installment Night Terrors yet? If not, you can get Night Terrors right here—over a hundred pages of free horror!). But the main point is that this man is despicable. He’s bestial. He’s, well…savage. Read more…

Isolation is terrifying. In our interconnected society, we’ve become so dependent on others, being cut off from them is scary. The most punishing prison confinement? Solitary, of course. When isolation occurs in a novel, we can easily internalize the panic of the protagonist, alone against the forces of darkness. We understand the fear that comes [...]

Snake-handling for Writers

By On Feb 7 2013, 3:34 pm

I’m not one of those writers who can start writing the moment their fingers hit the keys, not stopping until the session is over, filling up real estate on the scrolling screen like an old Teletype machine spitting out wire news. I’m not one of those writers who plot the entire novel down to the [...]

A knife in the back. Christmas carols. Welcome to the House of Sighs.

By On Dec 24 2012, 6:12 am

The following is an excerpt from my debut novel, “House of Sighs”. Here, Reggie Frost indulges in the spirit of Christmas. For her, it’s the end of the world masquerading as every dream come true. For us, we who know better, it’s a fantasy born from the horrifying murder of this poor mother’s family (in [...]
